My husband and I are avid hikers, and our little dog Finn loves to come along for the adventure. We like to spend time outside, enjoying nature, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in Los Angeles. Luckily, in LA you’re just a short drive away from some amazing hikes.
We kicked off our 2014 hikes with a pretty easy one, a 2 mile round trip hike up to one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mounts.
One of the great features of this hike, there is parking! Can’t tell you how many times we’ve tried to go hiking somewhere, and parked a mile from the trail head in a random neighborhood where we don’t know if our car is going to be towed.
The parking area alone looks out onto a great view, and heading to the right of the parking you’ll find the gated trail head.
The way up is a little steep, but overall the hike is pretty easy and straight forward, just follow the paved path up the hill.
This is a heavily graffiti’d area, as you’ll see, so there are all kinds of tags on the path up to the top. The TV one was our favorite.
To the left of the trail is an amazing view all the way to the top.
At one point the trail splits, the left trail takes you to another small rise, follow the one on the right to reach the lookout tower.
The lookout tower is amazing in person, it’s an old fire department look out tower, where they could watch for wildfires (it’s now owned by AT&T). Every inch is covered in amazing graffiti, not just stupid tags and ugly words, there is some real art on here. You could spend plenty of time just looking at the graffiti, and I’m sure when we go back next everything will have changed as the artists continue to build on top of one another.
There are more hiking adventures to come so be sure to keep a lookout on the adventure page for more hiking posts, and others like these.
